Buying the Right Softball Gloves

Just as with any sport that requires some sort of glove for play, softball gloves should meet a basic criteria that ensures the player is adequately equipped for participation in the game. Here's a few things to keep in mind when purchasing softball gloves.
One of the key elements in buying softball gloves has to do with the position that the participant will play. From the onset, it is a good idea to plan on buying the glove. Whether the position be catcher, infield, outfield or first base, it is important to make sure the glove is designed to do the job. Some gloves will do just fine for any or all positions, while others will be tailored more toward the particulars of the given position.
As an example, a catcher's mitt will typically have a fingerless design and will include thicker padding. This purpose for this padding is fairly obvious, since the glove is going to receive regular and repeated pounding from the high-speed pitches delivered by the pitcher. Extra padding helps to absorb the sting that would otherwise be the result of continual use throughout a game.
By contrast, softball gloves designed specifically for infield use are generally made with a five-fingered design and a relatively deeper pocket than a catcher's mitt. This allows for an easier grip of the softball, allowing the infielder to more quickly gain control of the ball and forward it on to a base player if necessary. Second base players will typically have a similar design, but slightly smaller than the infield glove. Third base players normally will use a glove that is slightly larger than the infield design.
Outfield positions require a glove that may be slightly longer in overall length. This allows the player to compensate for the longer length involved in making catches from areas of the field that are further away than the bases. The deeper pocket used for infield softball gloves is also found in the outfielder glove, and for the same reasons.
As is true of ant sports glove, it is important to make sure any softball gloves you consider are comfortable for the wearer. Also make sure the gloves provide the right protection for the position to be played, and allow for free mobility of the hand and wrist without chafing or inhibiting the natural ability of the player. By identifying the needs of the player and taking the positions to be played into consideration, you are sure to come up with the right glove for the situation.
